Hartmann's Sodium Lactate, also known as Hartmann's solution or lactated Ringer's solution, is an intravenous fluid commonly used in horses to treat dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and acidosis. It contains a balanced mix of sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, and lactate, which closely mimics the body’s natural plasma. In horses, it is especially useful during surgery, illness, or recovery from strenuous exercise, as it helps restore fluid volume, improve circulation, and support organ function. The lactate component is metabolized by the liver into bicarbonate, helping to correct metabolic acidosis and stabilize the horse’s internal pH balance.
Upon intravenous administration, the compound sodium lactate solution will replace any lost body fluids and electrolytes thereby providing hydration as well as normalizing electrolyte concentrations.
